Amphion Two18X Overview The Amphion Two18X outperforms its acclaimed predecessor with a newly engineered, ultra-low distortion tweeter and crossover network architecture that improves clarity, resolution, and transient response. Any professional monitoring arrangement might benefit from Amphion Two18X speakers. The twin low-frequency drivers and tweeter work in perfect phase synchronization to deliver a wide sound spectrum with excellent precision. These high-end passive monitors use custom-made drivers, a high-density Corian waveguide, and a sealed enclosure with a passive radiator to provide the natural, transparent, and unhyped sound required to make key mixing decisions. Sweetwater’s discerning engineers understand that monitoring on Amphion Two18X speakers will result in consistent mix translation. A Corian waveguide offers control and balance. Like other Amphion displays, the Two18X has a CNC-carved waveguide made of high-density Corian. This increases the tweeter’s capacity to couple with the air, extends its response down to the crossover point, and improves overall system dispersion uniformity throughout a wide frequency range of up to 55kHz. It also physically aligns the drives, resulting in better time and phase coherence. The result is a rock-solid phantom center, precision imaging, and a luxuriously wide and deep sweet spot, all of which help you create mixes that are applicable outside of your studio. Point-source performance imaging is the gold standard. Driver integration is a major difficulty in speaker design and manufacture. If you wish to merge the outputs of two distinct speakers effortlessly, set the crossover point outside the most sensitive portion of the hearing spectrum, which is the vital midrange between 2kHz and 5kHz. That’s why Amphion chose a very low crossover point (1.6 kHz) for the Two18X, resulting in unparalleled midrange clarity and point-source image coherence traditionally found exclusively in coaxial systems. This makes it easier to insert voices and solo instruments in a mix and produce an optimal balance that stands up well on “real-world” playback systems, where poor mixes perish. More accuracy with a sealed box and a passive radiator A ported (bass reflex) loudspeaker produces signals that cause internal pressure fluctuations and port turbulence, which can obscure the key midrange and reduce overall resolution. The Two18X’s sealed (acoustic suspension) cabinet design improves midrange performance and bass accuracy while also filling the space more evenly and predictably. Amphion’s rear-mounted passive radiator, which functions as a speaker cone, surround, and basket without a motor, moves in perfect synchrony with the front woofer, ensuring that the distance from the front to the back of the cabinet remains constant and that the air balance in the cabinet is maintained. This produces a tighter, more balanced bass response (as well as more forgiving wall-adjacent placement) than rear-ported versions.
